(Voir la version française ci-dessous.)
This grant supports the realization by a young adult of a concrete personal art or place-making project in memory of the life and values of Emma Burke Newman.
Rationale: This grant is given in memory of Emma Burke Newman, a second-year architecture student at The Mackintosh School of Architecture and a designer at New Practice, both in Glasgow. Emma was tragically killed by a lorry driver on Jan. 27, 2023, while cycling to the university.
Association EBN has created the grant to promote Emma’s values of compassion, community, and creativity as well as her zest for life and learning. She had an infectious laugh, a compassionate hug, marvelous personal flair, and a great sense of adventure. Emma was always looking for the next concert to attend, route to cycle, or skill to learn. She had plans to learn the banjo, take a DJ workshop, and walk the Munros of Scotland!
Emma, born and raised in France of US parents and later a resident of the UK, was fortunate to benefit from various grants throughout her short life. They had enabled her to help build a home one summer in New Orleans still hurting from Hurricane Katrina, lay concrete for a school in Morocco during another summer, study pottery and painting at Seoul National University, and intern in community-led design at The Glass-House in London. She took part in the Erasmus program to study the history of architecture at Humboldt University in Berlin.
Emma was resourceful in seeking opportunities to learn new skills in different geographies in the arts and place-making. She encouraged others to seize such opportunities. Association EBN endeavors to offer others the possibility to pursue these types of life-shaping artistic, educational, and cross-cultural experiences.
Grant details: This €5000 grant for the completion and presentation of a personal project in a field of the grantee’s choosing. It is payable in three parts – 30% upon proposal acceptance by the jury; 30% following mid-year review by the jury; 40% upon completion and presentation.
Eligibility: Applications will be accepted from young adults 17 to 35 years old who are residents of France (or other EU or EEA countries), the UK, or the US.
Project duration: The public outcome of the project must be completed by June 30, 2026.
Personal project: By personal, we mean a project defined and led by a single person. Fields include literature, the visual or performing arts (music, dance, even comedy), as well as architecture and place-making. For example, a poet or musician could compose original works in a creative way reflecting Emma’s values or life and stage a performance or concert or produce a publication. The performance or outcome could include other participants. We realize the parameters are general and will choose the project that best fits the criteria.
Applications: Applicants supply a 500-word essay in English or French describing the project and its connection to the life and values of Emma, a 200-word bio or a CV, a sample of work in the project area. Applicants are encouraged to refer to the blog for more information about Emma: https://emmabuildanewworld.blogspot.com/. Association EBN’s Advisory Board will jury all applications. The jury will choose the project that best fits the criteria. Members of the board and their relatives may apply but cannot serve on the project selection jury. The initial annual grant is 5000€, with the amount and criteria subject to change in subsequent years. Applicants may apply every year but can win only one award.
Send applications by June 30, 2025, to associationebn-hello@yahoo.com. We are also happy to answer questions about the criteria.
