Association EBN Awards 2025 Art and Architecture Grant to Pax Alberto
Association EBN is delighted to announce that U.K. artist Pax Alberto is the winner of the 2025 Art and Architecture Grant, established in memory of Emma Burke Newman. Pax’s project will fund free and inclusive puppet theatre workshops for underserved communities in and around Bristol, England, where Pax resides. (VF en-dessus)
What’s more, the workshops will feed into a spring 2026 People's Puppet Opera at the Cube Microplex in the city. Assisting Pax with the performance will be members of Beanpig Puppets, which they cofounded in 2019. This collective of queer puppeteers and performers “believe in the life of all things,” Pax wrote in their application for the grant.
“We like to use expanding the imagination as a revolutionary tool, to practice dreaming of other worlds, and realise that they are possible. These ideas are conveyed in abstract and surreal puppet shows, which we see as rituals of facilitation in the lives of our puppets,” Pax explains, “Ultimately, they choose how the story ends.”
Pax explains how the project connects with Emma: Her “commitment to creativity, community, and compassion, her love for reuse and placemaking, and her adventurous, open-hearted approach to learning are all reflected in this work.
“Our approach to puppetry is about transformation and possibility, values that resonate powerfully with Emma’s life and vision. Through this project, we aim to honour her by creating a space that is as imaginative, kind, and hopeful as she was.”
The outreach workshops will take place in community spaces such as libraries, community centers, and other accessible locations within underserved neighborhoods of Bristol. There will be two to three workshops, each with 10-15 participants, totaling 30-45 individuals. These workshops will help participants build the skills and confidence necessary to take part in the larger event, serve as an introduction to the People's Puppet Opera, and will help advertise the opportunity for people to apply.
Pax has years of experience in puppet theater, working with young people in learning and theater environments, and in the arts as an illustrator and muralist. They have a diploma in Art & Design and a B.A. in Anthropology from University College Utrecht. While there, Pax started the city’s branch of the Taste Before You Waste food saving initiative.

cycling to the university. Association EBN has created the grant to promote
